St. Bertilla, Virgin (692 AD)

Full Name: St. Bertilla (St. Bertilla of Chelles)

Period: 7th Century (Passed away: c. 692 / 705 AD)

Feast Date: November 05

Birthplace: Soissons, France

Significance: Virgin, first Abbess of Chelles Abbey.

Youth and Monastic Life

Born into a noble family, she desired from youth to renounce worldly pleasures and dedicate herself completely to God.

Joining Jouarre Abbey in France, she preserved her virginity and observed strict penance, humility, and prayer.

Abbess of Chelles

When Queen St. Bathild restored Chelles Abbey, recognizing St. Bertilla's holiness and administrative skill, she appointed her as its first Abbess.

She led the monastery for about 46 years, guiding it excellently in spiritual life and worship.

Attracted by her holy guidance, many noblewomen—including Queen Hereswitha of England and Queen Bathild of France—renounced royal positions to join her as nuns.

Humility and Fulfilled Life

Despite being the superior of a monastery, she considered herself lower than others and voluntarily performed hard manual chores.

Through immense gentleness, mortification, and unceasing prayer, she served as a spiritual mother to many and peacefully passed away into God's presence in old age c. 692 AD.

Spiritual Lesson

St. Bertilla's life teaches us to live with humility and a spirit of service while holding leadership positions, and to love God completely through pure virginity.
