St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Widow (1231 AD)

Full Name: St. Elizabeth of Hungary

Period: 1207 – 1231 AD (Passed away: November 17, 1231)

Feast Date: November 17 (Traditional Calendar: November 19)

Birthplace: Bratislava / Hungary

Significance: Princess of Hungary, Duchess of Thuringia, patroness of the Third Order of St. Francis, widows, charities, and hospitals.

Royal Family and Marriage

Daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary, she was married young to Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia in Germany.

Despite royal luxury, she maintained intense simplicity, penance, and love for the poor. Her husband fully supported her spiritual works.

Miracle of the Roses and Poor Service

Once, while carrying bread hidden in her apron from the castle to feed the poor, court members stopped and searched her.

When she opened her apron, by God's miracle, the bread turned into fragrant roses.

During a severe famine, she opened royal granaries to feed thousands daily.

Widowhood and Final Years

In 1227 AD, her husband died of illness on a Crusade, leaving her widowed at age 20.

Driven from the palace by her brother-in-law, she suffered many hardships. Joining the Third Order of St. Francis, she wore a simple habit.

She built a hospital in Marburg, personally caring for lepers and destitutes. She died peacefully on November 17, 1231, at age 24.

Spiritual Lesson

St. Elizabeth's life teaches us to serve the poor humbly despite wealth and status, placing total trust in God during times of loss and trials.
