Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (November 21)
Feast Name: Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary / Mary's Entry into the Temple
Feast Date: November 21
Significance: Commemorating the 3-year-old Virgin Mary being presented to God in the Jerusalem Temple.
Symbol: Complete self-dedication to God, spiritual purity, and preparing oneself as a living temple of God.
Historical Background and Tradition
Mary's parents were St. Joachim and St. Anne. Being childless for long, they vowed to dedicate any child born to them to temple service.
When Mary turned three, they fulfilled their vow by bringing her to the Jerusalem Temple.
Young Mary climbed the temple steps without hesitation, offering herself joyfully to God's service.
Temple Life and Preparation for the Mother of the Redeemer
Living in the temple, Mary grew in scriptural knowledge, unceasing prayer, needlework, and sacred duties.
Through this temple life, she received the spiritual purity, humility, and obedience needed to bear the Redeemer, Jesus Christ. She transformed herself into a true temple of grace.
Feast History and Church Tradition
The feast originated from the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary the New built in Jerusalem in 543 AD.
Widely celebrated in the Eastern Church, it entered Western tradition in the 14th century and was declared a universal feast by Pope Sixtus V in 1585 AD.
Spiritual Lesson
The primary lesson is to consecrate our mind, body, and spirit to God's will, living as pure "living temples" of grace.
