St. Eulalia, Virgin and Martyr (304 AD)

Full Name: St. Eulalia of Mérida

Period: 3rd Century (Died: December 10, 304 AD)

Feast Day: December 10

Place of Birth: Mérida, Spain

Special Significance: Virgin, young heroic martyr; patroness of Mérida, protector against dysentery and physical ailments.

Youth and Zeal for Faith

Born into a noble Christian family in Mérida, Spain, she stood out from early youth for her piety and purity.

When Emperor Diocletian launched brutal persecutions against Christians, she was only 12 years old.

Sensing danger, her mother hid her safely in a rural village outside the city.

However, burning with spiritual zeal to witness for Christ, Eulalia secretly slipped away at night without her parents' knowledge and walked back toward Mérida.

Courage Before the Official and Profession of Faith

Reaching Mérida, Eulalia walked directly up to the Roman governor Calpurnianus, who was persecuting Christians.

She boldly declared: "The gods you worship are demons; Jesus Christ alone is the one true God".

Astonished by the young girl's courage, the official offered her flattering enticements and urged her to sacrifice to the gods.

Eulalia rejected the pagan altar and pushed away the idols, standing firm in her faith.

Severe Torture and Miracle of the Dove

Furious, the governor ordered her body torn with iron hooks and burned with torches.

Enduring all pain joyfully, Eulalia won the crown of martyrdom in the burning fire on December 10, 304 AD.

At the moment of her death, a white dove miraculously flew out from her mouth toward heaven, and a miraculous snowfall covered her body.

Spiritual Lesson

Possessing the courage to witness for Christ regardless of youth or danger, and guarding faith at all costs without yielding to worldly pressures, is the lesson taught by the life of St. Eulalia.
