St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr (304 AD)

Full Name: St. Lucy of Syracuse / St. Lucia

Period: 283 – 304 AD (Died: December 13, 304 AD)

Feast Day: December 13

Place of Birth: Syracuse, Sicily, Italy

Special Significance: Virgin, heroic martyr; patroness of the blind, eye patients, young maidens, and vision.

Youth and Vow of Chastity

Born into a noble family in Syracuse, Sicily, she lost her father at a young age.

She secretly vowed her virginity to Jesus Christ alone.

Unaware of her vow, her mother Eutychia arranged a marriage for her with a pagan young man.

Mother's Healing and Charity to the Poor

Lucy accompanied her mother, who suffered from a severe bleeding disorder, to pray at the tomb of St. Agatha in Catania.

After her mother was miraculously healed, Lucy revealed her vow of virginity and gained permission to distribute her wealth to the poor.

Enraged by this, her pagan suitor denounced Lucy as a Christian to the Roman governor.

Severe Torture and Martyrdom

Under Emperor Diocletian, Governor Paschasius demanded she sacrifice to idols, but Lucy stood firm.

When guards attempted to drag her to a brothel, the Holy Spirit made her immovable like a rock; teams of oxen could not move her.

According to tradition, even when her eyes were gouged out, God miraculously restored her sight.

Finally, she was executed with a sword to the neck on December 13, 304 AD, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Spiritual Lesson

Setting aside worldly riches and remaining steadfast in purity and faith under the power of the Holy Spirit during trials is the lesson taught by St. Lucy.
